Spotting the Warning Signs of Substance Abuse

It’s never easy to stand by while a family member or friend falls into the trap of substance abuse. Often, they’re in denial about the significance of their abuse, and it’s up to loved ones to nudge them toward treatment.

This is a potentially central point of conflict and tension within these relationships, so you want to be sure before you act. New Spirit Health in Mesa, Arizona, specializes in addiction medicine, and we’re here to help with a collection of substance abuse warning signs.

Consider these potential symptoms before you reach out. The more you understand the realities of substance abuse, the better position you’ll be in to help.

Spotting the warning signs of substance abuse

The symptoms of addiction divide into three general categories: behavioral, physical, and psychological warning signs. Let’s examine the more common symptoms in each of these categories.

Behavioral signs

These can be about mood, interpersonal relationships, or personality changes.

  • Secretive and suspicious behavior
  • Sudden changes in routine, friends, or pastimes
  • Reckless or self-destructive actions and activities
  • Changes in finances, such as a frequent, unexplained need for cash
  • Increase in conflicts, like arguments and fights without a logical reason

A person suffering from substance abuse may be withdrawn and neglectful of relationships and responsibilities.

Physical signs

Someone who formerly took pride in their appearance may reveal an addiction through changes in personal hygiene. Other physical warning signs include:

  • Eyes are red, or pupils are larger or smaller than normal
  • Speech changes, including slurred words and an inability to express themselves
  • Sniffing or runny nose
  • Weight changes that occur quickly
  • Changes to appetite
  • Sleep pattern changes

You may also notice unusual and recurring odors on their body, clothing, or breath.

Psychological signs

The psychological warning signs of substance abuse often combine to give the impression that the person you know is no longer the person you see day to day. This manifests in ways like:

  • New signs of anxiety, fear, or paranoia
  • More frequent displays of anger or irritability
  • Sudden mood changes
  • Periods of nervous or reckless high energy
  • Lethargic episodes with little motivation

The substance abuser may be prone to frequent changes in attitude, mood, or personality.
